USD 394 hired an additional School Resource Officer at the start of the 2023-24 school year. Deshaun Smith, who is in second stint at Rose Hill, made his way back after a few years away.
“I have been in Law Enforcement for approximately 13 years now,” Smith said. “I started out at the Emporia Police Department. I then transferred to the Rose Hill Police Department. I then left the Rose Hill Police Department and went to the Andover Police Department full-time, but continued to work part time for the Rose Hill Police Department.”
Now the head SRO for all four Rose Hill schools, Smith has held many positions throughout the years.
“Through my years I have many certifications and have held different rankings like Sergeant, K9, School Resource Officer, Field Training Officer, and many others,” Smith said.
With children and family ties to Rose Hill, Smith was excited to continue his journey in the district.
“What drew me to the Rose Hill School District was the amazing opportunity and I also live in Rose Hill with my family,” Smith said.
After a semester and a half of spending every day at all four schools, Smith’s favorite part of the job has been getting to know the students and staff.
“The best thing for me being here thus far is just getting to know the amazing kids and staff in the school district,” Smith said.
