Former assistant principal Aaron Jackson was named as the new principal at Rose Hill High School. Along with that, Student Advisor Greg Welch moved up as Assistant Principal. Even with the new administration taking over, the student body should not expect many changes to be made.
The two focal points for Jackson are state assessments and Team Time
“As a staff we are working on incentivising the state assessment tests,” Jackson said. “Hopefully this will help so that they take the test seriously and give their best effort.”
Team Time will also have a major change this year and will now be a graded class with credit.
The goal is for students to learn more life skills for when they graduate. Many students agree that they feel Team Time does not matter and it is just a waste of time.
Jackson and Welch hope to change this idea and say that Team Time does matter. Welch believes in helping Jackson accomplish this goal.
“My job is to support Mr. Jackson and help promote his vision for the high school,” Welch said. “Mr. Jackson is a proud alumni and wants to see all students succeed at RHHS. My job is to help him achieve his goals as principal. “
Even though Welch does not have any major plans for the year, there are some changes with the tardy and tobacco policies. If you are tardy, it is an automatic 15-minute detention. The tobacco policy is similar to the old one except now will be a three-day suspension for any student caught with tobacco.
“We will continue to enforce current policies and practices,” Welch said. “The main changes made going into the year was a tweak in the tardy policy and our tobacco policy.”
Since some changes are being made this year, Jackson is hoping to start small before making any big changes, but wants to make changes this year that make the students more involved.
“I hope the students find value in this time we’ve devoted to covering different topics that we feel are important,” Jackson said. “This will give students more tools to be successful when they leave Rose Hill High School.”
