New principal Aaron Jackson has been thinking about ways to improve the high school and engage the students in every class period they go to. He wanted to give students a reason to be invested in a class that used to be thought of as a study hall.
“I spoke with several students who felt like TEAM time didn’t matter to them,” Jackson said. “I wanted to make that time more relevant and get more buy- in from students, so making it worth credit and giving grades is a way to accomplish this.”
Jackson is wanting to get into different topics and conversations in TEAM time that are more meaningful to the students and can impact their day to day lives. He wanted to change the class so kids would leave the high school with more education and be prepared for the outside world and future goals.
“I hope the students find more value in this time we’ve devoted to covering different topics that we feel are important, and give students more tools to be successful when they leave Rose Hill High School,” Jackson said.
The most major change that has happened with TEAM time is that it is now a graded class with assignments, most teachers would let it be a work on other homework time while some would try to engage with students.
But with this new change the admin is hoping that students will give their best effort when taking major tests or completing assignments, but the biggest goal is wanting students to take the state assessments seriously and do as well as possible on them.
“As a staff we are working on incentivising the state assessment tests so students give their best effort when taking them,” Jackson said. “Hopefully this will help so that they take the test seriously and give their best effort when taking them.”
