Rose Hill High School has started using the “Sway” concussion app for all athletes throughout the year. This app is making it so athletes know where they stand on a balance and reflex level before they even start playing.
“The Sway Medical platform wants to ‘use the mobile devices that athletic trainers and athletes already own for baseline testing, sideline assessments, and the return-to-play process through an ever-growing battery of balance, cognitive, and functional assessments,’” said James Werbin Rose Hill Athletic Trainer. “This allows me to have a baseline assessment of balance and cognitive function for each athlete.”
Superintendent Chuck Lambert was the one who first talked to Werbin about doing baseline concussion tests. Werbin was already familiar with Sway Medical so he was able to get it for our schools.
“Both myself and the administration wanted to find a way to better protect our athletes, and Mr. Lambert approached me last school year about doing baseline concussion examinations,” Werbin said. “I had experience with Sway Medical previously and suggested it to them, and they approved.”
Werbin is hoping that with this app can show him why a student has a concussion and how serious it is. This will allow him to make better decisions on whether a student should take a break or return to play.
“I hope that Sway will allow me to make more informed decisions when not only deciding to remove a student-athlete from participation, but also in their return to play,” Werbin said.
